Minister of Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities Wimal Weerawansa has stated that European Union is conspiring to appoint a 'jockey' of their interest to rule the country.
Addressing a function organized with respect to the opening of the Abdul Hameed Housing Complex in Kotahena the Minister made these comments with regard to the EU decision over imposing a ban on Sri Lanka's fish exports to the European Union bloc.
The Minister severely criticized the EU claiming that targeting the upcoming presidential election EU is taking measures to develop anti-government stance among the fisheries communities.
Commenting further on the misstatements of EU following the end of war the Minister further stated "Those days the EU cut down the subsidies provided for apparel industry.When the EU cut down on the subsidies the UNP said that the apparel industry will collapse and it will be the end of it. That did not happen.
Back then despite the deprivation of EU quota the apparel industry did not lose its market. Similarly no union can deprive the fishermen of this country of their opportunities
However, the matter we need to realize is that, western countries are doing all this to bring a jockey of their preference to rule the country".
