Railway strike continues; train time-tables not in effect – authorities say

The Railway Graded Trade Union Collective says that the trade union action launched by them centering on several grievances including salary anomalies will also continue on Friday.
For more information on this situation, we contacted Convener of the Railway Graded Trade Union Collective, Janaka Fernando.
Janaka Fernando, speaking on the issue said: “The trade union action that we commenced on midnight on the 8th October still continues. We had a special discussion with Finance Ministry’s P.B. Jayasundra, then he asked for a period of 14 days, saying that he needs to inquire into the matter and take action. After discussing with our members, we expressed our displeasure over the request of more time. We have made another request from the finance ministry for a decision with P.B. Jayasundra. We hope that he would give us a favorable response, just as he did yesterday.Meanwhile, Railway Transport Superintendent L.A.R. Ratnayake said that said all measures possible will be taken to make trains available for commuters.
L.A.R. Ratnayake said, “Though we were unable to deploy trains according to the normal time-table we managed to deploy trains for office service transport. At the same, time trains arriving from outstation areas did arrive in Colombo. We were able to deploy trains to other areas to a certain extent. We hope that the trade union action will come to an end today. If not we have taken measures to make sure that essential train services are available to commuters.
