Tamil National Alliance Leader R. Sampanthan has expressed his belief that common opposition candidate Maithripala Sirisena will abolish the executive presidency if he wins the forthcoming presidential election.

Sampanthan has also added that the party is yet to decide on whether or not to support Maithripala Sirisena in the election. Asian Mirror learns that several leaders of the party are currently overseas and a decision might be taken after their return over the weekend.
Meanwhile, Sampanthan has told BBC that he was impressed by the statement made by Maithripala Sirisena yesterday while announcing that he accepts the common candidacy of the opposition.
The former General Secretary of the SLFP Maithripala Sirisena yesterday stepped down from his position and officially announced that he will compete against President Mahinda Rajapaksa in the upcoming Presidential Election.
Addressing the press conference Maithripala Sirisena expressed his gratitude to all the opposition parties for appointing him as the common candidate.
