The Constitutional Assembly will meet next Thursday to make a final decision on the appointment of three civilian representatives to the Constitutional Council established by the 21st Constitutional Amendment.
Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena stated that approximately 112 applications for civilian representation in the Constitutional Council have been received.
Those who are not members of any political party and who have demonstrated excellence and integrity in public or professional life are eligible to apply.
The speaker stated that if there are other people who have not sent applications but meet the relevant qualifications, he will consider selecting three suitable people from among those who have applied to the parliament or appointing three suitable people as civil society representatives.
The names of the members chosen in this manner will, according to the speaker, be immediately forwarded to Parliament for approval.
