The Cabinet has approved to establish an electricity storage system to provide continuous electricity supply in Hambantota District, in the event of sudden power outages and during peak hours.Addressing the Cabinet press briefing today (31), Cabinet Spokesman Minister Bandula Gunawardana said the system will be installed under the grant aid agreement signed by the Governments of Sri Lanka and the Republic of Korea.
The Korean Government has agreed to establish an electricity storage system for 8 megawatt hours with a capacity of 5 megawatts using the Hambantota Grid Substation as the basis.
The minister said the Korean Government has agreed to provide 14.3 billion Korean won (about 11.9 million US Dollars) for this project.
Accordingly, the Cabinet approved the proposal submitted by Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera to sign agreements among the relevant parties to implement the project.
