According to a National Audit Office report, more than four crore rupees in house rent allowances were paid on behalf of 390 Uva Wellassa University staff members without the approval of the University Grants Commission.
According to the office, these payments were made between January 1, 2017 and December 31, 2020.
Meanwhile, according to the report, six Uva Wellassa University lecturers should have been charged more than two million and fifteen hundred thousand rupees in 2020 for violating the bond agreement.
According to audit department officials, 70 units of eight types of glass materials purchased for the biology laboratory of the Faculty of Applied Sciences in 2016 for more than twenty five lakh rupees and four equipments purchased in 2019 for more than one crore rupees remained unused for more than four years.
In response to the audit, the university administration stated that it is pursuing a portion of the arrears of the teachers who violated the bond conditions from the university provident fund.
The administration also stated that the offices were built for the university’s staff after basic infrastructure was provided to the students, and that the house rent was paid due to the inability to provide hostel facilities due to the increase in staff.
