A principal of a main school in Anuradhapura city, who submitted nomination papers to compete for the Anuradhapura Municipal Council representing the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna for the upcoming local government elections, has been suspended from working ,by the North Central Provincial Education Department.
It was said that the principal in question has been suspended for handing in nominations for the local government election without resigning from his position.
Under the election law, if a staff-rank officer in government service is running as a candidate for the election, he must resign from service before submitting nominations. However, a complaint has been received at the Anuradhapura District Election Office on the 8th of last year that this principal has resigned from his position and submitted new nominations.
It was mentioned that after examining the related complaint, the North Central Province Education Department has taken steps to suspend the service of the concerned principal with immediate effect.
