President delivers special statement in parliament

President Ranil Wickremesinghe delivered a special statement in the parliament this morning (April 26).

The President arrived at the parliament to join the ongoing session which commenced at 9.30 a.m. today under the chairmanship of the Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena.

The IMF-supported Extended Fund Facility (EFF) of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for Sri Lanka is taken up for debate in the parliament.

Delivering his statement, President Wickremesinghe emphasized that the shortcomings of this IMF program can be discussed since the IMF team will visit the country every 06 months.

“Some trade unions have raised their issues with regard to taxation. All those things can be discussed and resolved”, the president noted.

“We, the whole parliament, should be turned into a government in order to complete this purpose. Let’s get together for this despite the difference in opinions.”

The Head of State further expressed that now the country should be built up for the year 2048.

“If we don’t do this, we will ruin the future of the youth”, he added.

Last week the political party leaders scheduled a three-day parliamentary debate for the Resolution for the Implementation of the Arrangement under the EFF of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for Sri Lanka.

Accordingly, the IMF-supported EFF is taken up for debate in the parliament from April 26-28, according to the Communications Department of the Parliament.

The proposal submits that the Ministry of Finance, Economic Stabilization & National Policies should provide all necessary approvals for the implementation of the said set-up, however, a vote is to be followed post the three-day debate if necessary, the Communications Department said further.
