Won’t give in to religious pressure when appointing IGP: Govt.

The government will not submit to religious pressure or pressure exerted by any other organization when appointing the Inspector General of Police (IGP), State Minister of Defence Pramitha Bandara Tennakoon said.

He said that steps will be taken in the future to make the relevant appointment based on the government’s assessment.

The State Minister expressed these views while attending a news briefing organised at the Presidential Media Centre.

“The State obtains an assessment report each year in terms of security of the country for the next five years. Terrorism, extremism, illegal activities, geopolitics and crime prevention are covered in this assessment. The government takes steps in terms of national security based on this assessment,” he said.
